Namie, 9 km from Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Reactor

Place: Namiemachi, Futaba-gun, Fukushima-ken, JAPAN

Fukushima No.1 nuclear reactor exploded and widely spread much radioactive substances because of the earthquake on March 2011. Namiemachi is a town where is located 9 km from the nuclear reactor, and have been polluted by radioactive substances. Therefore the almost area of the town was designated ”difficult-to-return zone” and "restricted residence area", people are not allowed to live in the town. Because of that, the residential areas were running  to ruins, it seemed to be ghost town. However the restriction of the entry to some parts of the areas were eased last year. A memorial service was held in the town this year for the first time since the earthquake, and about 200 people attended.  


Miyagi, After 3 Years of 3.11 Earthquake

Place: Minamisanriku-cho / Ishinomaki-shi, Miyagi-ken, JAPAN

This was the second visit to Miyagi Prefecture since 2012, where had been damaged by the huge earthquake and Tsunami on March 2011. Devastated areas are in reconstruction phase. The rubbles which had been left at coast were removed, and the ground was being leveled by construction machines such as bulldozers. The reconstructions seemed to being progressed steadily. However there are a lot of people living in temporary houses, who are in uncertain situation even now. Many bereaved were praying in front of the monuments for the dead everywhere, because it was the day before the memorial day of the earthquake. The mental recovery of the bereaved could be more difficult  than the physical reconstruction.


Miyagi, 3.11 Earthquake Aftermath

On March 11th 2011, The Great East Japan Earthquake occurred in the Northeastern area of Japan. Miyagi Prefecture is one of the area where was damaged by the earthquake and Tsunami. The cities were destroyed as much as we cannot imagine the original townscapes, and a large number of people died. The survivors are under uncertain and strict situation. Although mass reconstruction supports from all over the world; donation and volunteers are promoting the recovery from the damage, it is still long strict way for the completely reconstruction, and iIt would must be very long time. Currently, sustainable reconstruction supports are getting to be needed more than tentative supports.
